Hi everyone, welcome back, as you can see today's topic has to do with cuss words or swear words. Can Christians swear? Are cuss words sin? What does God say about it? Does God care what we say with our mouths? All this will be discussed.
Well, let’s begin, what is Profanity?
Profanity is an offensive use of language, which is also called cursing, cussing, swearing or dirty/filthy language.
The question here isn’t about my opinion on cussing, this is not about me, this is all about God. What does God say? What does his word say about the use of this language?
Ephesians 5:4- “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”
Colossians 3:8 “But now you must also get rid of yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and Filthy Language from your lips.”
Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
James 1:26 “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceives themselves and that person’s religion is worthless.”
2 Timothy 2:6 “Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.”
James 3:9-10 “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be”
A lot of Christians cuss without feeling anything, they just talk and have no regrets or guilt as opposed to the ones who feels guilty afterwards. Some don’t even know it is sin, while others just don’t care. Believers, we are called to be set apart from the world, not to be like the world. From the one who is of the world and not of God, you will see and hear the ways of the world. But the one who is of God is not of the world although he is in the world, we are not meant to follow the ways of the world. I have seen some Christians cuss because ‘everyone does it’. No, we shouldn’t follow the world, we are to honor God with our mouth, we are called to speak words that build others up, words that makes us grow positively, words that draws us closer to God not away from him. You shouldn’t use the same mouth you praise God with at the same time speak filthy words. We should speak words that glorify God, not the devil and the world.
How to stop cussing and profanity?
1. Ask God to help you:
God is always there for us. But first you have to recognize that profanity is sin. Spend time in his word and you will know. God wants us to come to him for everything even the matters of our mouths.
2. Watch what you fill your heart and mind with:
“A good man brings good things stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”- Luke 9:45. What are you filling your mind and heart with? Is it those songs that are full of profanity? Is it those movies that are full of corruption? is it that book that’s full of dirty language and scenes? Is it those things that doesn’t glorify God? What are letting into your heart and mind? Watch what you store up in you, watch what you fill yourself with. Instead fill yourself with the things of God.
3. Watch who you associate with:
God uses friendship as an instrument of sanctification. It is important that all Christians should choose their friends wisely, if not you’ll have friends who will cause you to sin and lead you astray (Proverbs 12:26). Whether you like it or not “Do not be deceived: Bad company corrupts good morals.”- 1 Corinthians 15:33. People, watch who you associate with.
4. Guard your mouth:
“Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.” -Proverbs 21:23. Keep a guard over your mouth. Think before you speak, make an effort to watch what you say. Control your mouth, don’t just speak without thinking. Guard your tongue. “Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips” –Proverbs 4:24
As Christians we are to honor God with our lips. You can do it. You can stop cursing.
So, are cuss words sin? YES, cuss words are sin. They are words that bring dishonor to God because they are filthy and dirty words which the world uses in place with corrupt talking. We are not of the world; we shouldn’t imitate the world. Instead, we should imitate God and use our mouth to glorify him. We should strive to honor God with the way we talk as well as the way we live and act.
Verses for prayer:
Psalm 19:14 “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
Proverbs 141:3 “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips”
Meet with God now and talk to him, ask him to help you with your words, he hears you. Make the effort and fill your minds and hearts with his word. Always remember that friendship with the word is enmity with God (James 4:4).
